Parenthood
Sometimes my dad is surprised to find we have things in common. And then I remind him I am the fruit of his loins and he raised me from infancy, and he is still surprised. He says I turned out cool. What? Like you didn’t look at little infant Maura, poopy pants and baby vomit splatter bundle of joy, and think “I bet she’s gonna really like bikes and David Bowie.”
The old man did this to me the other day too, but for me it happened right before he grabbed his college copies of The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt and The Subterraneans by Jack Kerouac from our bookshelf for me. He goes “my bad for the existential crises and small hands, Kait” like he always says.
This time though he went downstairs for a minute after he did and pulled an old Hanson poster he saved from my middle school days from some hidden trunk in the basement. Sometimes our dad surprises me back like that. I never knew he had a little bit of fangirl in him too.
